Top Five Fabulous! December 19, 2019 1.      In art, we made gifts for our families.  We cannot wait to give you the gifts.  We also made cards and spent a lot of time thinking about our writing.   2.      The whole school met in the gym and we sang songs for Christmas.  We had so many favourite songs!  We loved to sing Feliz Navidad, Six White Boomers, Jingle Bell Rock and Carol of the Bells.  We also loved seeing our teachers being ‘elfed’ on a video!  It was so funny. 3.      Our classroom elf, Ginger June-Bug was all over our classroom this week.  She left us a note, along with a movie called, “An Elf’s Story”, she was in an Acadian bag, she used scissors to make a card for us, and she left us a note to say goodbye and that she loved grade 2. 4.      In PE, we had a couple of guest teachers.  These k...

Top Five Fabulous! December 13, 2019 1.      In math, we had a Grinch workshop.  We had to work with a group of kids on the first day.  We were either in the hat, collar or eye group.  We had to make the objects and measure them.  Hats were 1cm = 5 cents, the collars were 1cm = 2 cents and the eyes were 1cm = 1 cent.  Each kid had $1.00 to buy one hat, one collar and two eyes.  They had to figure out how much money they had spent and they could use the rest to buy presents (presents were 1cent each).  We were working on our addition and subtraction math skills. 2.      In science, we made boats out of tin foil and they had to carry a load.  We had to have a flat bottom, tall sides and no holes.  Our boats could carry ten unifix cubes and that represented their cargo.  We also had a special guest come in to talk to us about her time working on...

Top Five Fabulous!  December 6, 2019 1.     In art, we worked on a porthole.  We used magazines to rip out the colours that we needed.  We used a light blue for the sky and a dark blue for the water.  We will add sailboats into our picture next week. 2.     In science, we have been learning about boats.  We conducted a few different experiments.  In one, we looked at different objects and tested to see if they would float or if they would sink.  In the second one, we were looking to see which objects would absorb the water.  Finally, we used plasticine to see if we could make it float.  We discovered in the first experiment that the plasticine would sink, we had to figure out a design to make it float.  We needed to make sure that it had a flat bottom and tall sides so that the water could not get on board.  We really had to persevere for this job...

Top Five Fabulous! November 29, 2019 1.      We had Trickster this week!  We worked with a drama expert and they taught us a bit about acting and being on the stage. Our Trickster wrote a play using the Arctic as a guide and we practiced the play all week.  When we were not working on the play we were playing some games. We loved learning our lines and then presenting in front of the whole school and for our parents last night! 2.      We have started to talk about the clothes that people wore in Northern Canada in the past. The people could not just go to the store to pick up their clothes, or to the fabric store to make their clothes, they would use animal hide and fur to make their clothing.  We will make a trading card for clothing in the coming days. 3.      This week in literacy, we wrote about what we would do with $100.  Some of our ideas were: giving ...

Top Five Fabulous!  November 21, 2019 1.    In social studies, we worked on a new trading card.  We made a card to represent the language spoken in northern Canada (Inuktituk). We worked with a small group, after looking at pictures of some animals that would be found in the Northern part of Canada, and we wrote the English, the Inuktituk, the symbol, and then we drew a picture.  Ask me how to say hello and goodbye in Inuktituk.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUSwXbz7CtE 2.    Some grade 4 students came into our class to help us brainstorm what we would like to see in the new Learning Commons.  We watched a presentation and then got into groups to draw and label what we would like to see.  For example, some musical instruments, the solar system on the roof, an area to build and experiment and some art supplies. 3.    We went to the Learning Commons to go for a book look.  We m...
