Wonder
The grade two students will be exercising their questioning skills and their power of observation by participating in our Wonders. As a class, we will take a couple of minutes to quietly, and independently examine various photos/videos. We will think about what we notice and what we wonder. After the children have had a chance to observe the minute details on their own, we will share our ideas and questions. This leads to many rich conversations and many thoughtful discussions about current events and curriculum based events. Please stay tuned for our upcoming Wonders.
How do we get to school?
We have been discussing how we get to school with the grade 4 students. The grade 4 students have been tracking how many students in the school walk or ride to school each day. We watched the videos below and talked about what we noticed and what we wondered. So many of the kids in these videos had very long commutes, up to 4 hours to go to school, and they were often very dangerous. These children were willing to take the risk in order to work towards their dream of attending school. Watch the videos below and tell me what you noticed or wondered.
Water Safety
In science, we have been learning about water and what we can do to keep it clean and safe. Please watch the video below to see one simple way to save water. We had a great conversation about water safety. Ask me what I noticed and what I wondered after watching this video.
Animal Camouflage
In science, we have been learning about how the animals adapt to the cold weather in Northern Canada. We talked a lot about the predators and the prey for the various animals. We also discovered that in the open tundra, many of the animals camouflage with their habitat. Please click on the title above to look at the pictures of animals from around the world and how they camouflage!
Learning Responsibility
We watched this video together as a class. We listened to what the children said in the video and why they thought it was important to contribute to their classroom and to their school community. The children were amazed at the amount of work that the children in the video did, and they noted that all of the children in the video seemed proud of their contributions. Some of the students in our class then went on to discuss some of the chores that they do at home.
Persevere
Paul Smith is a wonderful example of not giving up and always putting in his best effort. The video below shows his amazing art works and the lengths that he goes to create his masterpieces. We had a wonderful discussion about perseverance and about how we should always try our best so that we can be proud of our work. The children talked about how some things can be a challenge, and that allows us to learn and allows our brain to stretch. We talked about making mistakes, and how that is essential for learning. Please watch the video below.
