Top Five Fabulous! January 10, 2020
Welcome back to school!
1. In science, we made a blueprint to build a floating habitat. We watched a video that showed floating habitats and we talked about why people might live on water in the future. We conducted another experiment to figure out how to make a cork stable. The students have conducted many experiments so that they can use the results in their final project. This week we also started to make our floating habitat! We will continue next week and we will test them next week.
2. In PE, we are working on a new skill. We are working on throwing and catching. We have been using bean bags to practice passing (underhanded) with a partner. We also tried some tricks on our own and passing not one, but two bean bags, back and forth with a partner. We had to use feedback, make sure that our partner had eye contact and we had to make sure that we took a step forward while we were throwing. We also practiced throwing at a target!
3. In math, we are working on 2D shapes. We used different 2D shapes to build a shape monster. We had to name the shapes and talk about how many of each shape we used. Next week we will use these numbers with mental math strategies to figure out the sum. There is also going to be a challenge if we finish the first task!
4. In literacy, we have new Daily Five activities. In word work, we are working on making words using a few different letters. We were given eight letters, and we could use each letter only once per word. There was a mystery word, and some kids actually figured it out! There is still one guided reading group that needs to try to figure out the mystery word, and then our teachers will tell us! In writing, we were talking about the things that we did over the winter break. These were fun things that we loved to do with our family and our friends!
