Top Five Fabulous! January 30, 2020
1. We had someone come to our school to teach us how to carve an inukshuk out of soapstone. First, we had to sand the inukshuk so that it was smooth and we could not see any of the cut lines. Second, we used another tool to make the lines so that it looked like individual stones. Third, we used two different grades of sandpaper to make sure that our inukshuk was smooth. Finally, we used oil to do the magic and make the colours come out! We had to persevere and it looked amazing!
2. In math, we made a shape town. We used 2D shapes to create a town. We had to name the shapes and then count them up. We used different mental math strategies to add the number of shapes together. Some of the strategies included: doubles, doubles +1, doubles -1, friends of ten and zippy zero. After using some mental math strategies, some of us drew a place value mat to find the total sum.
3. In social studies, we worked on two different trading cards. We learned about how the people of Northern Canada would get around (transportation) in the past. We also learned about the roles that people within a family had (the moms, dads, boys and girls). We started to discuss the games that kids would play in the past. We made a ring and pin game and we will make our trading card next week. I brought my ring and pin game home. See if you can get the pin on the ring!
4. In literacy, we wrote about where we would go if we could go anywhere in the world! We wrote about what we would see, eat, play, hear (using our senses). We came up with some great ideas! Before we did our own writing in our journal, we did a shared writing to see how we could add some detail to our ideas.
