Top Five Fabulous! November 15, 2019

1.    In social studies, we have started to learn about the Northern part of Canada.  We started by looking at pictures with a small group and talking about what we noticed and what we wondered.  We worked on some new trading cards this week.  We did two cards for the landscape (one for the spring, and one with the Northern Lights).  We watched a video about how children would help their parents make the shelter (igloos)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-x5QOSqP3E, in the past, before we made our shelter trading card.
2.    In math, we have started to work on addition skills.  We read the book, “Chrysanthemum” and used this book for math.  The character in the book had a long name (with 13 letters) and the kids were not kind to her, and they made fun of her name.  We then tried to add together the names in our table group (for example, the name Mrs. Reyes has 8 letters, and Mrs. Jenkins has 10 letters, so we would add 8+10).  Most groups have 5 or 6 people so we had to look for friendly numbers; for example those that would add to make ten, or doubles facts.  We also wrote story problems in our math journals.
3.    In PE, we continued to work on our basketball skills.  This week, we were working on dribbling and the chest pass.  We also had a guest teacher, as a couple of students have reached 100 on their treasure map for home reading they chose to teach PE for the day.
4.    In art, we learned about a new artist who is from the East coast of Canada.  Her name is Maude Lewis.  We learned about her life and that she had to persevere throughout her life.  She had arthritis and had a hard time holding her paint brush.  She loved art so much that she would work through the discomfort. We had 2 students from grade 3 come to talk to us about their experience with blister colouring and they shared some of the work that they did last year.  They are experts in this area.

5.    In literacy, we have continued to work on our skeleton sentences.  We are taking ordinary sentences and making them more interesting.  We had 2 authors share their work in the author’s chair this week!
