Top Five Fabulous! November 29, 2019 1.      We had Trickster this week!  We worked with a drama expert and they taught us a bit about acting and being on the stage. Our Trickster wrote a play using the Arctic as a guide and we practiced the play all week.  When we were not working on the play we were playing some games. We loved learning our lines and then presenting in front of the whole school and for our parents last night! 2.      We have started to talk about the clothes that people wore in Northern Canada in the past. The people could not just go to the store to pick up their clothes, or to the fabric store to make their clothes, they would use animal hide and fur to make their clothing.  We will make a trading card for clothing in the coming days. 3.      This week in literacy, we wrote about what we would do with $100.  Some of our ideas were: giving ...

Top Five Fabulous!  November 21, 2019 1.    In social studies, we worked on a new trading card.  We made a card to represent the language spoken in northern Canada (Inuktituk). We worked with a small group, after looking at pictures of some animals that would be found in the Northern part of Canada, and we wrote the English, the Inuktituk, the symbol, and then we drew a picture.  Ask me how to say hello and goodbye in Inuktituk.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUSwXbz7CtE 2.    Some grade 4 students came into our class to help us brainstorm what we would like to see in the new Learning Commons.  We watched a presentation and then got into groups to draw and label what we would like to see.  For example, some musical instruments, the solar system on the roof, an area to build and experiment and some art supplies. 3.    We went to the Learning Commons to go for a book look.  We m...

Top Five Fabulous! November 15, 2019 1.      In social studies, we have started to learn about the Northern part of Canada.  We started by looking at pictures with a small group and talking about what we noticed and what we wondered.  We worked on some new trading cards this week.  We did two cards for the landscape (one for the spring, and one with the Northern Lights).  We watched a video about how children would help their parents make the shelter (igloos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-x5QOSqP3E , in the past, before we made our shelter trading card. 2.      In math, we have started to work on addition skills.  We read the book, “Chrysanthemum” and used this book for math.  The character in the book had a long name (with 13 letters) and the kids were not kind to her, and they made fun of her name.  We then tried to add together the names in our table group (fo...

Top Five Fabulous!  November 8, 2019 1.    In social studies, we finished all of our trading cards for the East Coast of Canada.  We worked on the trading card for how people met their basic needs, in the past.  It is different to how we meet our basic needs today.  We also worked on a trading card for the traditional foods, and deportation.  Mrs. Jenkins brought in some of her treasures to share with the classes.  They were cool artifacts.  Ask me about some of the artifacts. 2.    In math, we have been working on number lines! We made a human number line.  We were given random numbers between 0-40 and we had to find the right place in our line. Some of the numbers were missing and we still had to figure out where our number would fit.  After making a human number line we made our own number line using paper.  This was a challenge to figure out the spacing...

Top Five Fabulous! October 31, 2019 1.      In PE, we continued to work on our badminton skills.  After giving feedback to our partners and asking them for feedback, we could not believe how much easier this skill has become.   2.      In math, we showed numbers using a place value mat and showed the same number in different ways.  For example, we could show 43 with 4 tens and 3 ones, or we could show 3 tens and 13 ones. We rolled a number using a double die.  The outside number was the tens and the inside number was the ones.  We used a place value mat, a hundred chart, and place value pockets.  We also used ten frames to show numbers in different ways.  This week we also had a pumpkin investigation.  We used our math skills to describe the pumpkins.  We estimated and then measured the height, and circumference.  We counted the number o...
